Deep Dive below the Internet Surface

Identify risk to your organization with the dark web

Today’s organizations can face complex challenges, especially in cybersecurity and digital risk management. While security teams recognize the importance of understanding cyber threats, many overlook a crucial data source: the dark web. Often seen as a haven for cybercriminals, the dark web can also provide valuable insights to help protect against cybercrime with the right tools.

Cyber incidents such as ransomware attacks, data breaches, and IT disruptions, rank as the top global risk (36%) in the Allianz Risk Barometer in 2024.¹

The dark web harbors significant cyber threats, including targeted cyber attacks, insider data leaks, software vulnerabilities, or exposed credentials. Accessing the dark web may not be impossible, but the real challenge lies in navigating the vast amount of data beneath the surface and pinpointing the threat. Security and risk managers need fast access to critical information, as cyber incidents can escalate in seconds. NEWCOM, an authorized partner of Dataminr, can improve your agency’s cybersecurity posture by identifying risk indicators in real-time.

The 3 Levels of the Internet

    Surface Web

What users access in their regular day-to-day activity. It is available to the general public using standard search engines and can be accessed using standard web browsers that do not require any special configuration, such as Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer or Edge, and Google Chrome.

    Deep Web

The portion of the web that is not indexed or searchable by ordinary search engines. Users must log in or have the specific URL or IP address to find and access a particular website or service.

    Dark Web

A less accessible subset of the Deep Web that relies on connections made between trusted peers and requires specialized software, tools, or equipment to access. Two popular tools for this are Tor and I2P. The tools are commonly known for providing user anonymity.
