Digital Alerting to Increase Safety for Massachusetts State Police
PEMBROKE, Massachusetts, May 22, 2025 – In an effort to reduce on-the-shoulder crashes, Massachusetts State Police is now integrating HAAS Alert’s Safety Cloud® digital alerting into their vehicles, through NEWCOM as the system integrator and solution provider. This collision prevention service enables the delivery of real-time alerts to Massachusetts drivers when emergency services are actively responding or stopped on the roadways.
Safety Cloud boosts compliance with Move Over laws by dispatching real-time notifications directly to drivers when responders are en route or on-scene. This digital solution effectively enhances lightbars and sirens with additional in-vehicle notifications, thereby minimizing the likelihood of collisions with responders.
Safety Cloud’s digital alerting automatically broadcasts alerts to drivers up to 30 seconds in advance of emergency vehicles or road workers. Alerts are sent out only when officers are responding with lights activated. Drivers cannot see a vehicle’s location beyond that. This preemptive measure is proven to significantly reduce collision risks by up to 90%, safeguarding both first responders and the motoring public.
Despite Massachusetts Move Over laws necessitating drivers to decelerate and change lanes when approaching active emergency vehicles, delayed or non-compliant reactions persist. Safety Cloud addresses this issue by providing up to 30 seconds of preemptive warning, facilitating safer responses.
Drivers can receive these alerts directly through leading navigation apps, like Waze and Apple Maps. Safety Cloud alerts are also available on the infotainment screens of millions of vehicles, specifically 2018 and newer models of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram through the EVAS (Emergency Vehicle Alert System) feature 2024 and newer models of Volkswagen vehicles.

NEWCOM has collaborated with the Massachusetts State Police to install the HAAS Alert Safety Cloud in more than 230 patrol vehicles in 2025. This initiative is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), covering costs for installation, subscription fees, and ongoing support services.
”As an innovative Department committed to using technology to mitigate dangerous situations, the Massachusetts State Police believe Safety Cloud will enhance the safety of Troopers, first responders, and the public we serve. Providing drivers additional time to move over, slow down, and pay extra attention to their surroundings will make emergency scenes and work zones safer. We appreciate our partners at NEWCOM for their expertise as well as the Office of Grants and Research, the Executive Office of Public Safety, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration who provided funding for this important public safety project.”

”By bringing digital alerts into vehicles, the initiative sets a new standard for how state police can use technology as a tool for increased safety. We are seeing nationwide interest in this initiative and plan more than 5,000 vehicle installations this year alone.”
